Hey all I am still trying to get better performance out of this game.
I know its a demanding game and to be honest could be tweaked to make better use of hardware.

Any ways I am in the process of trying to get it to run better.
I purchased a 4890 1gb a while ago and it helped BUT I think my Q6700 at std clock speeds is holding it back.

The reason I say this is because in some missions I am getting 20fps (most of the time 30-50fps in some missions) if I look up or where there is no major rendering for the GPU to do it will either stay at 20fps or some times go to say 25fps depends on scene.

Now the only thing I can think of is the CPU is this a bottle neck in my system now?.

And it does seem to lag a little more when the AI engage.

So will an over clock help I really want to hear from others with the same kind of spec system and if they have over clocker there Q6700 and if it made a difference in ARMA2.

System spec

Asus striker extreme 1
Q6700
4gb ram
ATI 4890 1gb
crappy hard drives (need new ones they dont help the problem as this game streams large amounts of data)

Thanks all

get that sucker oc'd. I started with pretty much the same, but a 4870 512mb and a dual core, then went 4890 2gb and a quad at 3.2. made a lot of difference for me oc'in.

Hi thanks for the reply.

Should my Q6700 get to 3.2GHZ it was from OCUK and I am sure it was the ones guaranteed (subject to MB) to over clock.

P.S I have the first titan fenrir.

I feel your pain, mate. I have an i7 920 @ 4Ghz, Asus RIIE mobo, 6GB XMS3 @ 1600Mhz and 2 x 5870 in C/F and I get poor performance in ArmaII.

One thing to note is that you should set your Shadow levels to High or Ultra High. This forces your Gfx card to handle all shadows instead of the CPU which should ease the strain on your chip.

Also take a look at the BIS forums for some tips on how to tweak your game, link below :)

Hey matey :( yep demanding game.

And I have all ready got them on high/V high :(.

I have been into arma when it was OFP so to speak even then OFP was very hardware demanding.

Same here.....Oh no, 3, is down! :P

You might have a look at the PROPER series of mods, these tone down the vegetation, buildings etc to help achieve smoother framerates. I can't find a link to the PROPER mods offhand, but you should find them on the BIS forums if you register and run a search. I've never used them myself but I hear they are pretty good. Hope you find a solution to your ARMA II woes, happy fragging

I am reged at BIS have been for ages ;)

STK2008 same as me ingame ARMA2 name :)

I use ACE2 so that will lag me pc more as its a very big mod but damn its good.

I have made a ramdisk and it helped smooth the lod and loading times in flight as I said ARMA2 streams more data than any other game tbh.

I just need to get faster CPU clocks I may OC me CPU soon.

I want to lap me CPU as I have about a 8c diff between cores

1 55c
2 55c
3 46c
4 47c

All under load.

set the 3d textures to your default res.
forget about postprocessing (off) and all the other stuff normal then view distance is cpu dependant really - that should make it run better.

the biggest increase in grx is the 3d textures and it doesnt drain to much cpu power - the biggest hit to that is the view distance.

Hi there I never run PP I hate it any ways hahhaa.

I have me res set to 1680x1050 for both 3d and the other one cant remeber whice.

My view distance is 3000
all others are normal
Shadows V high to High
Anti off
tarrain detail very low

So I cant see why its the GPU as its not really dropping FPS when I look away or at the ground that much so it really is me CPU?.

Is the 4890 1gb going to be bottle necked by a std clocked Q6700?

I've ran a 4890 @ 2048x1152 without issues... are you playing single player missions?

Bare in mind that generally playing MP will yield higher frame rates due to a lot of the processing being offloaded to the server. When you're playing SP you are running every single script on your local machine which drains your FPS and memory.

My settings for the single 4890 when I ran it was pretty much all on very high with AA on low... I could be your CPU but I'm not sure, I've ran my i7 @ stock and 3.8, not huge differences tbh. It all depends on the mission itself, if its poorly made then you'll get poor performance, simple as.

Hi there well the std clock of a q6700 is 2.7 so you say your i7 std clock is 3.8 thats a hug diff so would explain why you was able to run at higher settings?.

So there for fingers crossed if I can get a 3.2 clock out of my q6700 I may be on to a winner :).

Thanks

As mentioned try to get that cpu clocked up, also try lowering the vegetation and object detail down a little. You dont really need the view distance at crazy levels either if you're on foot.

It is a very cpu intensive game in single player, It's only become very smooth for me since I upgraded my cpu to a i5 2500k. Best bet is to find out which settings stress the cpu most and try lowering them.

Ok all thanks for the reply s.

When I get me PC striped down and CPU lapped in etc I will then look at over clokcing the beast cheers :).

Best of luck with it, hope you can at least reduce your performance issues if you can't eliminate them entirely. This game is such a nightmare to get running smoothly it makes you wonder what friggin PC's the Arma devs run the game on :/

Read again ;) I've ran it at STOCK and at 3.8 :p stock on my i7 is 2.8.

Ah sorry rexehuk miss read.

And thanks AeoNGriM I will keep ya posted no doupt I will be asking for help in to OC section.

Its been years the last time I OC and that was an old Abit NF7-s 2.0 with the lappy processors every one had oh the good old days
