I've been out of pc gaming for a while now. I previously had a pentium 3 1ghz, 768ram, geforce2 mx gfx card and as a result, new games were out of the question for me. Only decent games i could run well were, half life, quake 3, and unreal tournament. Now i've upgraded my system to athlon 64 3000, 1 gig ram, but unfortunately still have the same gfx card for *** moment. Just found out my nephew now works in a game shop so can get some games at a decentish price, so what GOOD games have i missed out on since the day of half life/unreal tournament/quake 3 that you reckon would run good on my new system? Im mainly into fps, but i'll consider anything, not really into rpg's though tbh.

Your graphics card is old hat mate, and it would be a shame to ruin the latest greatest by hacking them to run on that card...

Get yourself a new graphics card.. 6800gt? or something and really enjoy Halflife 2, FarCry, Doom 3 [Questionnable]

Hmm, you'll want:

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Unreal Tournament 2004
Half-Life 2
FEAR
Far Cry
Quake 4
Doom 3
Call of Duty + United Offensive
Mafia

To name a few FPS and third person games anyway.

If you want to consider anything, try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a basic RPG, but very very good game non-the less, especially if you're a Star Wars fan, but you don't really need to be.

On a gf2mx I certainly wouldn't consider anything from 2004 onwards. Quake 3 engine games like Jedi Knight:Jedi Academy, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault warchest, and Star Trek: Elite Force 2 should be ok. Deus Ex and NOLF2 too.

A couple of years ago I did try running my gf2mx in P4 system and Vice City performance was absolute turd, even in 640x480.

To be honest your previous system was pretty well balanced, whereas now your graphics card is a huge bottleneck. Where possible you should attempt to play games in 640x480 (or below), 16bit colour until such time as you can afford something better.

cheers for the help guys, nice info HangTime, appreciated :)

the 6800 is a ati isn't it? I had an ati before and wasen't really that pleased with it, prefererd nvidia. Can you guys recommend a nvidia card that is of a similar price to the 6800 which also has good performance?

The 6800GS OC for £135inc is a great deal. It would give you a massive performance boost in modern games (at least 6x as fast) and allow you to play with much nicer graphics.

In fact there's probably quite a few recent games which wouldn't even run on a gf2mx, so you'd be opening a whole new door. a64 3000+/1gig ram/6800GS is a nice well rounded system which can play even the latest games quite well as long as you don't have settings cranked right up to the max.
