OK...SO WHICH ISP???

Have spoken to be*....
They say as i'm 4km from the exchange i'm not going to get more than 2mb from the line???
Told them I'm 2.5km from the exchange in a straight line and am already getting synced with BT at 5.5mb and can download on speedtest and about 4400kb/s off peak....
They then mumbled something about not being guaranteed a connection of over 2mb due to the distance so therefore i am not going to join em now! Even on the unlimited package i would still not be guaranteed any speeds over 2mg according to them, so that's put me right off. Will stick with BT although i do get throttled down to only 1.5mg during peak times! DOH!!!!

I'll be the first to recommend Nildram, they've been superb for me and I can't fault them :)

And I'll be one of the first to tell you that I left them after four years because they have just been bought out by Tiscali, they are now traffic shaping and throttling. Their support has also gone right down hill in my experiance since they got bought out by Pipex.

Save yourself the trouble and sign up with an Enta reseller such as ADSL24/UKFSN/Titan etc. if you want to get rid of BT. 1 Month contracts and very generous bandwidth caps, also no traffic shaping on the Enta network at the moment and there probably wont be for the forseable future.

BE always under estimate themselves.
They told me i'd get about 6 meg & i'm getting 11 ;)

Can't take the risk with Be* now...especially not as I would need to sign up for 12 months....

So am now thinking of switching to an entanet reseller like UKFSN or ADSL24, although not an LLU at least they dont throttle or profile....APPARENTLY!!!!

Thanks for all your comments and recommendations so far guys. It's been very useful. :D

^enta do manage their traffic during peak times. here's another post i made about it recently....

i don't know if you've researched them at all so i will mention the anti loss tool they use. the peak time runs from 8am to 10pm. now when 10pm rolls around, everyone goes a bit mad with their downloading and their centrals tend to get overloaded. but to counter this and avoid packet loss, they automate a speed reduction on everyone on the affected central to balance things out. you'll find most evenings for an hour or 2, that speeds will go down to 4-5mb, sometimes as low as 2mb but never lower than that. the speeds soon rise backup once things balance out. it's a good system and it works well. and the best thing of all is you can monitor it live on their website or even by downloading a little application someone has wrote. sometimes this will kick in on the afternoons/evenings on the weekend - all weekend is off peak so again it can get busy. what i like about this system is that even though speeds are reduced for a short while, you can always max out your connection with whatever protocol you like and are not punished for using p2p like most other isps.

even when they do cut speeds back, you'd never notice anyway. browsing normal websites is still snappy as ever. that's why i left bt, because their traffic management would make browsing a chore - waiting noticeable longer for pages to load. and like my quote says, this only happens for a few hours after 10pm. for at least 20-22 hours a day, you'll get the max your line supports.

That's exactly my problem with BT, as you say browsing is noticeably slower when the speeds are throttled, I think entanet are going to have to be the way to go...only problem is the usage allowances.. I can't afford anything more than the £19-99 option ie 30gb peak and 300gb off peak. Is this a reasonable allowance for normal internet usage with a bit of p2p and u-tube veiwing etc?? do people normally go over this limit??

well you can monitor your downloads via the website or using a program called entatool. and i doubt you'll even use 30gb let alone 330gb. :)

compared to other isps who offer capped services, enta's allowance is huge.

would you suggest against virgin media cable then? i ordered it for the 13th now i kepe hearing bad things... The phone lines in my house are old though for adsl.

i assume you mean virgin adsl?

anyway, avoid like the plague. :D

i don't think many people have anything favourable to say about virgin adsl at all.

here you go. a speed test at 7.15pm tonight on ukfsn. how's your bt doing right now? :p

Not great considering I get twice as much off peak! mind you am only paying £2 less a month with BT! :p

Nah that's it, have got my MAC code and am going to probably take the plunge with ADSL24 tomorrow...
Wish me luck!!!!! ;)
