I've got a car for sale and an interested party has asked for the reg no. & ref no. from the registration document (V5) for a car history check, seems fair enough but is the registration document reference no. necessary? The number plate registration is actually clear in the pics, just wondering if in this day and age having possession of someone's V5 reference no. allows some sort of scam or other.. Maybe paraniod but don't want to be suckered into anything :(

They're probably doing a HPI check, when I did one they asked for the V5 document reference number to carry out a stolen document check.

Its fine to give it out, they probably need it for the HPI check and also an MOT history check to verify car milage.

Also allows them to see what the vehicle identification number is on the national database and compare it to the one on the vehicle, to see if its been chopped/cloned!

One of the first things I ask for when looking at used cars, 99% of the time people are fine to give it out, the ones that aren't are probably hiding something.

Have they seen the car yet? Why would they spend £20 on a HPI check if they haven't even seen the car? I would be suspicious and wait for another buyer.
