Hello,

I posted a thread a couple of weeks back about my CPU cooler (Arctic Cooling Freezer64 Pro) making a really annoying noise when idle. It's sorta like the noise a hard drive makes when it's in use.

Having tried everything I could think of I decided to order a new cooler. I picked the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64. Mainly because it was a nice cheap replacement (only about £6).

Having installed the cooler with no problems whatsoever I am now totally ****** off to find the same annoying sound is back. I know 100% it's the CPU cooler as well. Because when I unplug the CPU power cable (for a couple of seconds) the noise disappears.

Please help Overclockers :(
 
2 different fans. Both making the same stupid noise. Both under the same circumstances.

I think maybe it's some voltage setting on the motherboard in the BIOS? But I wouldn't know what to change. And I just reset the motherboard BIOS to default, and the noise is still here
 
Sounds like one of the finns could be bent and is vibrating when the fann spinns up , tale of the cooler and have a look at the finns . It may be that you just have to bend one of the finns back .

m8 this is a new cooler. The old cooler was doing exactly the same thing. What are the chances of that?

And when I installed this one it seemed perfectly fine (build quality wise)

Sorry fella only thing that comes to mind the way you describe the noise . If its the second cooler that is doing then either the cooler is fubar , my above solution , a wire is causing it or its not seating properly .

That's the point though, both coolers are making exactly the same noise. So I really don't think it's the cooler.

My best guess is some sort of voltage setting on the motherboard, but I wouldn't know where to start with that.

As I mentioned in the old thread the noise is only made when the computer is idle. When I play a game it goes away.

Surely it should be the other way around?

what setting have you got it on in the bios
 
Get your head in there and have a good listen to find out exactly where on the cooler this noise is coming from.

Can you wobble the cooler?

Anything else wobbable that may be affected by the cooler?

As said, ensure all the wiring is clear and non-wobbable?

Check for general wobbliness?

Sorry, I have an affinity for the word wobble at the minute.

sounds like an unbalanced fan. getting the same thing on two different coolers is unlikely, unless artic cooling are using shoddy fans which, for £6, isnt impossible is it.

I can't specify where on the cooler the sound is coming from. But it's definitely the cooler.

Yes I've tried "woobling" it around, and it has 0 effect

I really don't see how it could be unbalanced. I fitted both very carefully, and they both went on very well.

The replacement fan was £6 (the one I have in now), not the original. The original was an Arctic Cooling Freezer64 Pro, and that was like £15 :(

By this do you mean the "optimal" "silent" "performance" setting option in the BIOS?

If so, I don't think it's that. I've tried every setting (even turned it off), and the result seems the same every time
 
last time i had a fan that made this kind of noise it was the case, a screw not tightened up can have a dramatic effect on vibration causing all sorts of noises.
