At the moment i have a 8800gtx and im stuck...

do i get another 2 8800gtx's and have a 3 way sli or do i go for a newer card like the gtx460 but only have a 2 way sli??

i want to have them on there own loop in my big water cooled build with 4 kits.

OVER KILL i know but its the only way for me lol.

two 460's in SLI humps a 480 no problem....therefore 2 cards would be better than 3 imo

you might get performance for having 3 cards but it's old tech these days...under water you could OC the nads out of the 460's too :D

you could also overclock the nads off a single 480 by putting it under water too but depends on if you want to spend 340 odd quid on 1 card

Due to the cost of the 8800gtx and the performance of tri sli scaling I would ditch your current 8800gtx and pourchase an 460 as this card is probably about twice the speed an 8800gtx sli. Adding a second will also prove to be more beneficial in terms of power draw too as dual 460s will use a considerable amount less power than a tri sli 8800gtx setup.

You will also be granted an new warrenty with both supplier and manufacturer which you would almost certainly not recieve with a pair of second hand 8800gtx units.

Power is not a problem as i have a 1200w psu im looking at doing four water loops in this build as i have them here to play with.

2 460's will likely be more fast than 3 8800 gtx's just due to scalling issues as the fermi seems to scale exceptionally well.

Nope. 2 highly overclocked GTX 460s beat a single stock GTX 480 by about 25%. A highly overcloced GTX 480 narrows that margin considerably.
