I found a old sapphire radeon hd 4850 gddr3 625/993. Can I overclock it to 670/1100 with the default fan, and still get a stable system? Any advice? Thanks.

A difficult question to answer confidently there skyrim...

The clocks you've posted don't seem all too ambitious; unfortunately with both cpu and in my opinion gpu o/cing more so, it really does come down to whether you have a cherry picked card - especially if your gpu is a reference board. It might o/c beautifully on stock volts or it could be a dud and barely get off the ground.

The best way to find out is to push the system up in 5/10mhz increments on the core, using heaven or another intensive game to check for artefacts. Find the limit and pull back 10mhz from there... Repeat with mem clock and you'll have your stable o/c. If you feel like putting more volts into the card then do so if you feel confident, however don't ram anything silly into it and blow the card up!

You'll gain more benefit from o/cing the core as a general rule of thumb, though that isn't suggesting that you ignore the mem completely of course.

Keep an eye on temps, anything up to 80 would probably be - acceptable - for a 48xx series card, my 4890 didn't run cool even at stock.

The gains you will net might be lacklustre depending on what you hope to be playing/using the card for, but it's better than nothing as I'm 99% you'll be out of warranty on that card now ;)

Thank you very much. I will try to find its limit this weekend. Hope it will not blow up.:) For the infamous heat problem of 48xx series card, you remind me of it, I may have to set the fan speed at 70% or even 100% manually. It will be noisy, but better than turning into a fireball.
