I have a old AMD system
cpu - t'bread B xp2000+ @ 2100MHz SocA - mboard kt880.

I want to upgrade the cpu to max possible (with air overclock),
don't want to change MB yet.

Anyone suggest what cpu I should get and If its possible to get it.

Thanks

it would probably be cheaper for you to buy a motherboard, ram and processor. Athlon socket a processors aren't cheap :)

The mobile 2500+'s were legendary chips as they had an unlocked multiplier which meant they could be clocked to 3200+ speeds and above.

I would either get one of those or a genuine 3200+.

They run super hot so a decent air cooler would be required.

I had a 3000+ and was very happy with it!

Unless you can get a reallly really golden overclocker and end up somewhere in the close to 3Ghz region, its pointless getting any other chip, and then even that is'nt worth it tbh as you won't see any appreciable difference.

TBH, i have sold a couple of Sckt A cpus on a well known auction site, a Barton 2500 and 3000 (not sure whether barton or not). the 2500 went for about 35 and the 3000 for about 20.

Not too bad if ** looking for a quick fix before a major upgrade.

I believe I am cpu limited with a 7600GT-AGP grpahics card?.
So to get most out of the graphics card I though upgrade cpu.

Would I get much improvement say from xp2800+ to xp3200+/3400+.
Is it worth it ?.

I had an old 2400xp which overclocked beyond belief, it only died when I tried to go above 2.6ghz, it was way out performing the 64bit 3000 i replaced it with mistakenly.

I wouldnt have thought you would have noticed much of a difference unless you can get an amazing overclocker, as stated above ^, but then you can only really achieve the good speeds with watercooling cos they tend to run a bit warm.

If you go for a CPU upgrade, the 3200+ has a 400mhz FSB, so the memory subsystem is much faster than the other 333mhz processors. But you will need DDR400 memory, and if you don't have any, then it may be more economical to go for a new Core2Duo based system.

You'll probably see quite a noticeable increase with that graphics card if you stick a 3200 Barton under the hood... going from a Tbred B @2GHz to a 3200 boosted my frame rate from 25fps to 31fps on a Radeon X800XT when playing X3...

It might not sound like a lot to those of your with C2Ds/8800GTXs, etc. but it's a massive percentage difference and it's very noticeable.
