Hello guys, im a bit of a noob so bare with me. But I'm just doing a new build now and thought id save some cash by using my old PSU (20 PIN 450W Unbranded)

Two things

1. Will this be ok to use with my new setup? I have gigabyte P45 mobo (24 PIN & 8 PIN), Q6600, 4GB, HD4850
2. I ordered a B-Grade HD 4850, however the card has a 6 pin power connector. My PSU doesn't have such a connector. Is it because A: the B Grade GPU didn't have the right connector within it i.e. 4 pin to 6 pin. Or B: because my PSU is old so it doesnt have one of these 6 pin connectors?

Please help! I have a new build waiting for me but no power!!

Thanks

Do you have a sticker on the side that tells you what its 12V capacity is? How old precisely is it? It absolutely has to have the separate 12V 4 pin connector (not the one on modern PSUs that joins the 20 pin connector to make it 24 - you can get things to work without that - but the dedicated 4 pin 12v connector is essential. I doubt there are any 450W psus about that dont have this, even el cheepo non branded ones.

After a bit of capacitor ageing you may be lucky to have 300W of the all important 12V capability if its a poo one.

I killed my Enermax ageing 350W psu within 1 month with a 110W tdp processor + the 110W tdp ATI 4850. It claimed to be capable of outputting 24A of 12V, so 288W of 12v. But it was about 5 years old.

Most Ati 4850s are supplied with a molex -> 6 pin adapter. Thats not your problem. Its how far you are willing to push that Q6600 combines with the 4850. At stock, the 95W TDP Q6600s (I'm assuming its not one of the earlier editions) plus the card, are most likely to be OK with your PSU.

its not worth it to get all your nice new components and rely on an unbranded old PSU - invest in a new reliable branded one
