old backup tapes to new ones

Is there a way of getting information from old backup tapes to the new smaller type that are 1.6TB? I think we have an old server but how do we get the info off the tapes

1.6TB sounds like LTO - what format (standard) are the old tapes?

You're probably going to have to restore the data onto HDD and then back it up again onto the newer style tapes. LTO is completely different to our DDS type tapes and I can't think of any way to do a tape to tape transfer (probably would be unreliable anyway).
