Basically ive had this pc new since 2006ish and think my motherboard is too old for what i want, and after upgrading a few parts i thought i wouldnt have any trouble running games, cod4 etc.

In game i get good frame rates, and i dont really lag about but the game still doesnt run smoothly, image jolting round, frames dont really link etc, and kindof screen tearing now and again.

At first i thought it could be my CPU because it was idle at 60-65 degrees and was only running at 2.2ghz, so i cleaned the heatsink, cleaned the cpu of the tiny amount of paste that was on it, reapplied my own thermal paste and reassembled. Now the CPU idles at 40ish and runs its full 2.8ghz and when running games doesnt go over 52, but still the same problems.

My graphics card is an XFX HD 4830, not touched it overclocking wise and it seems to do the ingame graphics justice, has an ok temperature of around 45 when the game is on.

After using CPU-Z to check whats going on inside the pc, it shows my Ram (2gig OCZ Platinum) is running at 130mhz, which is a bit 'lolz' so i reckon this could be the issue.

I cant fiddle about with clocks in my bios or anything, all i can do is monitor temperatures, RPMs and speeds etc.

Running on XP 32bit SP3, 600W power supply recently installed too

At the minute i cant afford a new board and processor, so can anyone diagnose the problem which will help in the meantime?

Cheers

well the RAM could be an issue, its DDR2 so the actual speed is 266, which is still very low though. You could try turning all gfx settings to minimum to rule out the gfx card, doubt it is that tbh. You could try getting some new RAM, get the fastest your board will take and get 4 gig (32bit will only see around 3.5 but its still better than 2, and its dirt cheap atm anyway)

Ive had all the graphics (card&game) set to minimum and to be honest its just the same as when theyre on full whack. Ive just tried my old ram, only 1 Gig, 2x 512 but that was running at 260mhz, faster than the new ram but being half the capacity i take it that its just the same speed as the new.

Also i found a manual online after ages of searching, found that the slots only support up to 400 and i dont want to fiddle about with CPU to RAM ratios in bios seeing as i know nothing about them.

Looks like im gonna have to wait a while and maybe just invest in a board that will support everything and get a quad.

Cheers for the input though :)

chances are it only supported 400 when initially released but bios updates now mean it will support more, I cant find a bios history/changelong though, if you can you may find it will support moore than it was initially released as doing so

I checked the pc manufacturer website and downloaded the latest bios update on there which was dated sometime in 2008, but as for the ASUS website its like my board model doesnt exist :P
