Hi, my build is:

4GB Corsair DDR21TB Western Digital Cavier Green 7200RPM
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition 3.0Ghz 8MB cache
1GB Sapphire HD 4870

in an Antec Sonata ii (i think) case.

I'm very new to building PCs and my dad actually put together the one above back in 2009.

I hadn't used it for a year or two, switched it on today after re-setting it up and the fans is crazy loud. The fan at the back is not moving BTW when in action. I am recording tempratures of 65 degrees under minimal load (browser open).

I am also interested in overclocking this CPU if possible but obviously not at the moment given the high temps im getting at rest.

I am presuming I need a cooler or new fans... I don't know which to order/choose. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Also I am looking for a new case as the Sonata's usbs are broken. Thats low priority though but what cases could I use?

have you had a look inside and gotten rid of all the dust, it tends to push up temps pretty well, would also try some fresh Tim on the chip.

for the Cooling + Fans, around 50 would be great. I'd be willing to go higher if I could overclock stably but I'm very new to overclocking so I'm very uneducated compared to you guys here!

for the case, I'd say around 100 or so. Basically anything that looks very nice although the case purchase can wait... the cooling is needed ASAP.

What would be the best way to get rid of the dust? Would a simple hoover do the job? Fresh Tim?

There was/is quite a lot of dust when I checked but I wasn't sure how to get it out. I'm guessing I can't use polish lol and I don't have a hoover in the apartment.

edit: just checked what TIM is. I'm going to buy some and apply. The Case is fan (the one at the back) is definitley not spinning though as I just checked when it was on.

Thank you, will that fit in my case etc.? I'm a bit concerned it won't fit in or something.

BTW how would the Akasa AK-968 X4 Performance multi-platform CPU cooler figure? My friend said he could sell this to me fairly cheaply but is it far more inferor for OC than the cooler master?

The Akasa AK-968 X4 only has 3 heatpipes but the Cooler Master Hyper 612S has 6 heatpipes which will release more heat to the fans to take out,

Also when you purchase the CPU cooler, it will come with thermal paste

Thank you, thats awesome. I'll grab the Cooler Master Hyper 612S + some canned air.

For fans, what shall I purchase?

Also just to make sure, this will fit in the case right?

I spoke to my Dad who is going to fix this in and his apprehension is taking off the old heatsink from the CPU because its "glued on"... anything I can buy to help this along?

Thank you so much for your help!

Which parts of the computer you trying to clean out? If it's not that bad, you can save yourself from buying compressed air and use cotton earbuds

If you're thinking of purchasing a new case, it'll come with cooling fans

The heatsink should be attached to the motherboard with screws

1. I think compressed air is probably the best bet... its VERY dusty in there TBH, it hasn't been cleaned since 2009.

2. I'm not going to buy a new case ATM I think on second thoughts due to money :(. Could you recommend fans instead since I presume that will be far cheaper?

3. I did a bit of research and found the Cooler Master 212 EVO might be better than the 612 despite the 612 having 4 heat pipes and its easier to install. Is that true??

The Antec Sonata II case supports 2x 120mm fan (rear & front), 1x 92mm fan and 1x 80mm fan,

YOUR BASKET
2 x Arctic F12 PWM Case Fan - 120mm £4.39 (£8.78)
1 x Arctic F9 PWM Case Fan - 92mm £3.49
1 x Arctic F8 PWM Case Fan - 80mm £2.99
Total : £19.18 (includes shipping : £3.26).

Installation of the heatsink is the same, it's best to go with the Cooler Master Hyper 612S instead of the 212 EVO

Thank you so much for your help.

I have a little bit of cash and was wondering would it be worth be going for the:

Thermalright Silver Arrow over the 212 EVO or 612 ES.

Would the Silver Arrow fit in my Sonata II case?
