Hi there.

Long story; I went to install a new HDD on my older build which is:

PowerColor HD 7850 2048MB GDDR5
Intel Core i5-2550K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge)
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155)
Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2)
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9)
Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler
+ 3 other SATA HDDs.

When I plugged the new HDD in, (power off etc) I booted up and it posted. However for some reason the motherboard wouldn't detect any of the HDD's in bios and wouldn't boot.

I tried unplugging some etc and just having the SSD plugged in.. still wouldn't recognize the in bios or any of the other HDDs (individually or collectively).

I left it a while to go google on my laptop. I came back and it then refused to post at all. (power was on, fans would work but not POST).

I did the usual and disconnected everything, took the motherboard off the case (last time I had that the mobo was shorting on the case) and just connected one stick of ram, the CPU + cooler and the grfx card whilst it was on a non-conductive pad. (also reset the bios).

Still wouldn't post (same thing, power light on, fans work, but wouldn't post).

Subsequently I've purchased a new build:

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
NZXT Phantom Enthusiast USB3.0 Full Tower Case - Black
Corsair Builder Series CX 750W Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020061-UK)
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX)

The new build does exactly the same thing! Powers on, fans go and won't POST.

I'm at my wits end as I can't identify which component is faulty...

Any ideas on other things to try?

wazza300 how will he update the BIOS when the PC won't POST?

OP: for your new build troubleshoot from bottom up. Disconnect everything leaving CPU, board and PSU. Turn PC on and check for memory beeps (plug in a PC speaker). If you get beeps then add memory in one at a time and go from there.

If it does not give you beeps then board is goosed and time to RMA.

Thanks for the replies so far chaps.

To make it clear:

Both the old build and the new build fail to POST whilst on a non-conductive mat, with just the PSU, CPU, grfx card and one stick of ram.

My case doesn't have a internal speaker somewhat annoyingly.

I've also cycled all the components between the new and the old which leads me to believe I must be really unlucky and have broken my old mobo and the new mobo is also broken.

Note that under all circumstances the power is on (fans will turn) and the CPU will get hot (both CPUs).

Tried both the onboard HDMI on the new mobo and with my grfx card in.

Swapped cables around and used both PSUs.
