I've got a Galaxy 850W PSU that has been collecting dust. i'm tempted to build myself around the 2500k i5 with an SSD and buy a GFX nearer the time Battlefield 3 is released.

have motherboard power connections changed at all?

don't want to order all this kit to find that the PSU (about 4 years old) doesn't plug into it.

thank you for your time.

this one?

or this one?

Second one has 20+4 motherboard connector, 4+4 power connector, and loads of 6 pin and 8 pin PCIE connectors as well. That covers everything. Not sure about the first one, but that should be the target. 20+4, 4+4, and some 6 pin and 8 pin PCIE connectors.

The PSU has enough power for a single card though, it's only got 400W for the GPUs, but 400W for the CPU. Well, should take two medium GPUs (6950, 560, 570 even), but not two 580's (at least I wouldn't try).

EDIT : hmmm on second thought...

Its the DXX version.

i wouldn't have the money to Crossfire or SLI so would only get a 6970 or 570/580 once prices drop.

a single high end GPU should be ok then?

Don't waste your money on a 6970... just go for a 6950 and flash it to 6970 for identical performance at a lot of a lower price.

cheers for the heads up.

i can't afford a GFX card right now but my current PC is a shuttle XPC and is aging badly and if that struggles with portal 2 and everyday tasks i just need to start fresh and get a gfx card in the months to come.

just wanted to know if the PSU i had would fit the sockets on a new mainboard.

You can buy adaptors for all these 'new' plugs, ie molex to sata, molex to 8pin etc...

My trusty old FSP 550w only had 2x sata's so thats what I did. Most important things are the extra 4 main mobo connectors and the P4 style 4 pin for the CPU (IIRC) which pretty much everything has anyways :)
