My mother has expressed a desire to me to try Second Life. She wants to play it on her home computer which is equipped with a gig of DDR333, a 2800+ 2.25Ghz Thoroughbred, and nVidia integrated graphics. The mobo has an AGP 8X slot so I decided to scrape up an AGP card so her rig would meet the minimum spec. Last week, a suitable video card fell into my lap:

The only problem with the card is that its fan is shot. The previous owner retired the card from service when he decided he could no longer tolerate the intense whining of the cooling fan. I haven't tested it so I don't know exactly how bad the situation is but suffice it to say I'm looking for a cooling solution.

What aftermarket cooling solutions are available for this relic from 2002? Are there any clever hacks that might save me some money in this endeavor?

You could try peeling back the sticker over the fans bearings and applying a single drop of oil on them and putting the sticker back. If you don't have any 3-1 Oil then I've used cooking oil before (not olive oil or anything fancy). Worth a try before you think of buying another cooler.

One of my mates used to use a Zalman silent cooler on a very similar card, I'm not sure if you can still get them but it was two donking great heatsinks that sat either side of the card connected by a couple of heatpipes. You could also get an additional fan to attach. :)

Coolermaster do a similar one, called the cool viva afaik. I am pretty sure it fits the 4600 cards and can be had for as little as £6~

Sorry to neglect my follow up in this thread, guys. I had a go with oiling the fan/s bushing. I was fairly certian that the fan was more fragged than oiling could fix but oiling it was free so it was worth a shot. I unscrewed the top of the cooler then unscrewed the fan from the the rest of the device. I discovered that it barely turned! I peeled back the sticker on the bottom side of the fan. All looked OK so I assumed that there was just crap stuck in it. I grabbed a small can of household oil and placed a drop on the end of the shaft, spun it, and repeated this. The difference was immense. Now is spins relatively freely. It's still not perfect nor is it silent but it's definitely usable. I reckon next time I venture to her house I'll crack her open again and see how it's holding up.

It runs Second Life on high settings with no problems whatsoever. Thank you for the advice, gents. :)

Always thought of eVGA as a recent company. Wonder if they provided the same level of service back in the GeForce 4 days.

Christ man that was just wrong.

ROFLMAO. Anyway :D (snigger) hows about just getting a good passive cooler on that, I highly doubt the fan is neccersarry for example my brothers 9550 fan shot ages ago, we never bothered to sort it and it's been fine.

EDIT : Just seen you sorted it anyway, top stuff! :D
