Hi All

I am just setting up a spare computer I got from work, for my girlfriends dad. I can't remember the whole spec off the top of my head but think it's something like a 1.1ghz celeron with 128MB ram and onboard sound and video.

In otherwords not a great spec..but it's got to be better than the Pentium 2 350mhz comp he currently has.

He is a huge fan of RPG games (played all the Zelda games, final fastasy, sudoken etc etc). So I was wondering if there are any good slightly old rpg games for the PC which would run on this machine???

Also, is it possible to play them using a control pad as he is used to playing on games consoles and hence would not like using a mouse and keyboard???

ANy help would be much much appreciated as it's his birthday on Saturday and my girlfriend and I would like to be able to present hims with the comp and a controller and games then if at all possible.

Ta muchly.

RPGs on PC tend to be a lot different than they are on console, I'm not sure he'd like anything we suggest, especially since they all pretty much need to use the mouse and keyboard. You might be better off setting up some Snes, Megadrive and PSX emus for him.

Saying that, you can get some good deals when it comes to RPGs on PC. You can get compilation packs for the Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Fallout series for example.

You'll be hard pressed to find anything like Zelda, Final Fantasy and Suikoden though :(

:edit:

KOTOR 1 and 2 only need a 1GHz cpu to run, if you can get them running I'm quite sure he'd enjoy them. You still need to use a mouse and keyboard though as far as I'm aware.

Temple of Elemental evil, google the fan patch though as the basic install is bugged to hell.

Fantastic game once it's properly patched.

Be warned that the chances of some of the games mentioned in this thread (KOTOR/NWN series) running smoothly with only 128meg RAM are very slim. I know that you don't need uber framerate in an RPG, but it still isn't going to be pleasant if it's continuously paging all over the shop. If the onboard video is using system memory, it's going to be even worse.

I'd be looking at the classics like the recently released Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale compilations.

Diablo II!

You should be able to run Morrowind on that system, definetley worth a try, especially with all the user made content out there.

Hmmm, from reading up on some of the suggestions, I htink I'm gonna try to "acquire" diablo and diablo 2 to see if they will run if so I'll pick them up as they are nice and cheap around and about.

Thanks for all the suggestions. If there are any more, keep them coming.

Icewind Dale I & II, Baldurs Gate I & II, Diablo 1 & 2 (both have expansions) Ultima 4-9 (Not sure if 9 will run properly), Fallout 1-3, Deus Ex.
