Hi Guys... I have an old Compaq Presario 705EA Laptop, with a 1Ghz AMD4, 256Mb PC133 RAM, SIS S3 Graphics and a measly 40Gb hard drive that I want to breath new life into!...

I want to ditch Windows as its struggling with all the latest updates and getting bloated...

What flavour of Linux would you suggest I pop on it!... something that (hopefully) will be compatible with all the hardware (including the SIS Graphics)... I don't want to have to faff with too much... I've used Ubuntu (Feisty and Gutsy) in normal and Studio flavours.. but I don't know enough to fettle too much!!

I only rally want to use it for browsing the web, Chatting (is there a yahoo equivalent for Linux?) and maybe download bits n bobs and save em on my Windows box across the network...

Cheers (in advance)
Sim. :)

Ubuntu sounds like a fine choice. Did it not do the job? If so you might want to give Xubuntu a try if the problem is memory consumption. You might also look into Fedora and OpenSuSE.

Pidgin should be able to work with the Yahoo IM network.

I've not actually tried it yet on the Lappy... I had Ubuntu dual booting on my main rig with XP Pro, but that went a bit flakey...

I'll give it a go at the weekend... I've got a copy of the latest version of Ubuntu on Disc somewhere...

I've also heard about 'Mint' being a ubuntu derived distro... is it any good???... whats the Hardware compatibility like???..

Cheers Doods..
