Son wants a PC to play games thought about new build but his funds are low so might give him old box I have.
Q9550 + 4gb + 6450

If I replace the video card for something a bit better will it play modern games at 1680. CPU will run at 3.6 if required but it's in sx38p2 so 3.2 or 3.4 GHz really.

Yep it will do mate although you'll probably have to avoid high/ultra settings, medium should be fine.

get a cheap 280x from the MM and an extra 4gb ram (ie 8gb total)
that should do nicely for now, and cost less than 150-160 quid

A Q9550 will be fine, probably similar speed wise to an i3 anyway. Just get a reasonable GPU and if you can afford it another 4gb of ram.
