Old Dell Workstation upgrading

Hi folks

I invested in an old Dell Workstation with 2xquad Xeons over a year ago for very little money. It's been great for video editing and audio which I do a fair bit of.

I then got interested in gaming again last month and got hold of a GTX 760 - been loving Mad Max at 60fps (for 90% of the time) and other games I've missed out on. Inside is a must btw!

Here are my current specs:
Dell Precision T5400
2xXeon E5449 2.83ghz
8gb DDR2 ECC
500gb HD
MSI GTX 760

I was looking at getting an SSD and more memory. That's when the old hardware bottle neck hit.

I didn't realise that ddr4 was not compatible with ddr2 motherboards. It's just I've been out of the game for so long.

If I'm going to invest in a new motherboard - I'm loathed to buy new cpu when I don't get them right now and the performance I get (vs value of new one) has been excellent.

What dual cpu mobos are there out there that are ddr? Or am I just shooting myself in the foot here to make a negligible saving?

Idea is to upgrade to rx 480, 16gb or more and get an ssd boot drive.

Thanks for your help folks.

Thank you for that tip. I'd have missed that if you hadn't have said it.

When it comes to setting up an SSD - is it best to just do a fresh install of Windows?

Thank you Micky. Just ordered a GTX 1060 and I'm on the hunt for an SSD - wish me well.

I'll report back in the thread with how it all goes.

Good luck, i would recommened at least a 240gb ssd.

It's a shame I didnt' see this as I went for 128gb - got the 1060 but experiencing the same kind of stutters at certain times. Seems to be triggered by sounds. Another thread I commented on is having a very similar issue.

I've also sourced some more memory - it's 800mhz rather than 667mhz ddr2 ecc but we'll see if it makes a difference.
