im trying to upgrade a old G5 (power pc) from 10.3.5 to 10.5 (leopard) but the machine cannot read the DVD,

I have a usb DVD drive but it will not boot from that... (i can get the boot options up but it does not offer the USB DVD)..

if I try and start the install from the OS it wants to reboot then just boots the original OS again - i guess it does not expect a USB DVD

any "tricks" to make this work?

I could swear I saw a YT video how to install from USB stick... and I think also you can get it to select device using something LIKE the Linux /dev/sda etc selections. Sorry, I know it can be done but can't recall where

Or you could remove the USB drive from its enclosure and connect instead of current G5 DVD.. chances are the USB is SATA anyway ;-)
