Old gaming rig needs upgrade

Ive got a old gaming rig that i dont use anymore but like to keep two pc`s just in case was wondering what processor i can upgrade to it currently uses

Asus p5b deluxe wifi motherboard (p965 chip)
Intel core 2 duo e6600 2.4 ghz
Artic cooling freezer pro
Corsair 4 gig of ram
Hitachi 320 gig hardrive

I would like to keep the motherboard if possible but would like to replace the processor any ideas or have i got to get an entire new motherboard.

Why dont you just overclock the 6600? 3.6 should be easy enough. If you want to get a new processor then an E8X00 would be an good choice.

with that cooler the E6600 could hit 3.3GHz+

but if your dead set on a new chip might be worth having a look at the E8*** range

I dont think i can use the new E8*** range it isnt compatible with my old motherboard i am currently reading the forums about overclocking us i have never overclocked before.
