God I feel old when I havent used a cross over cable in decades and now I want to connect two 2.5GB USB-Ethernet adapters so my main PC can talk to my NAS quicker. All my switches etc are gigabit and I dont want to invest in 2.5Gb switches so thought I needed a crossover cable and the USB3-2.5Gbe adapters.

Now Wikipedia confuses this old git and suggests many devices (not all?) can just use patch cables?

Do I need Cat6 cable? Machines are right next to each but will probably want a 1m cable just in case I wanna move them a bit.

Please advise and treat an old man kindly  You may also become old one day!

Not needed, was only for 10mb and 100mb as I recall. Gigabit up is fine without as it's virtual now.
Back in the day network cards were much simpler and less flexible.

Cat 5 should be fine for short runs so if you have a cable give it a spin.
Cat 6 up cost very little more so no need to cheap out if you're buying one.

Thanks guys.. was definitely feeling the age last night when I posted or might have been tired after flight :) Flashbacks of building my 386 from parts too!
