Old Laptop Question

All the computers in our house are now Macs which is a shame as I really fancy playing some old classic games.

I've got an old Sony Vaio laptop which was really high-spec at the time but it needs a new HD and is outside warranty.

Is it possible to grab one of the spare external HDs I've got lying around and get the computer to run/boot off that via USB? How difficult is it to setup and would it be too slow to play games etc?

Many thanks,

What is the spec of the laptop?

Core 2 Duo T7300 / 2 GHz - Centrino Duo - RAM 2 GB - HDD 200 GB - BD-RE - GF 8400M GT - WLAN : 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR - Vista Home Premium - 15.4" Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA )

Easily enough to play the likes of Sim Golf, Red Alert 2 etc.

Just plug in the externel HDD via USB and make the appropriate changes to the BIOS to make the laptop boot from it.
