My son has lost his OEM install disc for his laptop and now his HD has given up the ghost- whislt its easy to get a replacment HD. What pitfalls will I have if I source another gen windows disc. Will I have problems with the pre installed HW and then having to find the drivers for it?

The reason I ask is that it maybe that it is cheaper to get a refurbished laptop as he really only uses it for surfing and the odd bit of homework (office)

Thanks for looking in :)

On the bottom of the laptop there is a windows serial key
All you have to do is find a download for the version your key says
you burn the iso to a dvd and then use it to install windows

drivers:
if your lucky the laptop has as service Tag label , this service tag when ever
entered into the manufacturers website will take you to the correct list for all
the drivers you need , all you usually have to do as select windows version you
are using.

As Lurkio has mentioned, find a copy of Windows to download and use the key that should be on the bottom of the laptop. I always find it easier to find the drivers on another machine and move them over once the install has completed.
