Hi guys. Ive just been given an old laptop (free) as the guy said it was crap and so slow he was going to bin it.
So question is what would be the fist thing to upgrade? Its got 1gb of ram and a 120gb hard drive. I think i have an old corsair force 3 ssd laying about somwere but would have to buy new ram. Also were could i buy a new cmos battery from.?
If i can get this thing working ok it will stop a lot of bickering as to who has the only laptop in the house lol.
Cheers guys n merry xmas:D

Ok cheers. I Dont know for sure it needs a new battery but its been showing the wrong date/time a couple of times on boot up so it may be that, but as im taking the back off to give it a god clean i may as well chuck a new on in as its a few years old now.
Thanks for the link i will have a look now.:)

If it looses time then it's likely the cmos battery that needs replacing, it will take a button battery just like a desktop.

Is the CPU socketed? Older CPUs can be had quite cheap now.

Definitely try to up the RAM to 2GB+. If you can stick an old SSD in there then it should fly.

I've got a 6 year old laptop with a similar speed C2D CPU and it runs Win8 very well with 3GB RAM and an old WD Black edition hard drive.

The CPU really isn't taxed that much during day to day tasks, web browsing etc. A C2D at 1.7 should be plenty for the simple stuff.

Well i put the Corsair SSD in and its like a new laptop also installed win 7 and will order a 2gb stick of ram just to help out with multi tasking.:D Happy Days.
