old machine - wireless problem

Hi. I have an old machine (8 years), 500 MHz originally running Windows98 but now XP, which has always worked perfectly. I purchased a usb wireless network transmitter to connect to my wireless LAN, but it won't work. I've tried the new component on another computer and it's fine (so the device works). When I run the install disk, all is well until it asks me to insert the usb device whence it does not detect it. No matter what I do the machine cannot detect the device. Is there a way to check if my usb ports are working (if that could be the problem). Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Hi. I've done the device manager thing and selected enabled, but still no joy. I've now tried a few simpley usb devices e.g. keyboard, mouse, but nothing. Is it possible that the usb ports are not compatible with XP (recently installed to replace 98)? Also, I have no sound and the CD drive won't play audio tracks. Cheers.
