Old MMo, was there one where you lost your character when you died?

In WOW, you go from grave to your corpse. Apart from pride, durability and a little walking time, nothing else is hurt.

I seem to remember mention of an old MMO where when you died, your character basically was nuked, and that was them finished. I remember someone talking about it, did I hear wrong? Because if that is true that is a little... harsh...

Ultima online you lost items or sommat, not as harsh as it seems though because you didn't have the shiny gear that takes months to collect, or the levels to truge through again.

Some old MUD's used to be like that not sure which ones though.

Although in EQ rarely your corpse would fall through the floor and if you couldn't retrieve it before it decayed and couldn't contact a dev, that was as good as perma killing your character if you couldn't get reimbursed, especially if you deleted your character in a nerd rage /whistles innocently

EVE Online, if you don't have yourself cloned, and you get podkilled, your character is gone.

NWN was the first online rpg I played where death meant something, where you actually got 'attached' to the characters you built. I have to admit I always played a Druid so I could summon a vast array of animals to keep my pursuer occupied while running in the opposite direction. Of course id always try to keep my animal companion alive!

Hellgate has a 'death is permanent' mode.
