Old mothberboards with mini-PCIe

I'm looking for a cheap board to put a build together with some old parts. The early mini-pcie ports on H81/Z87/Q87 etc Haswell series motherboards don't support seem to physically have space for full length 2080 SSDs but if I get a half size 2040 ssd do you know if these olds boards and chipsets allow you to boot from this slot or were they more for wifi etc like on laptops. Happy with either SATA or NVMe

Some z97 boards do take the larger ones, might be worth looking out for one of those instead.
