What linux distro would you people recommend me for the spec below?

athlon x2 64 4200+
1GB (2x512mb) RAM
160GB ATA HDD

I tried Lubuntu 14.04, but the system lagged no matter if run from pendrive or while installed on HDD. The main factor is performance, but also I don't want a retro looking system like puppy. One of the systems I was thinking about was TinyCore, but is there something better out there? I'm not too fussy about fancy looks...

Give Xubuntu a try, it's supposed to be very lightweight.
I don't think this will be lighter than Crunchbag, I use Xubuntu on Virtualmachine and the graphics would slow it down.

Edit

Well it works, working on this PC while having next to it my main system feels weird. I guess this PC is just old, but crunchbag is way faster than lubuntu! :)

I'll try to add a GPU to this system and see how movies will run, at the moment for browsing web, documents and other easy tasks it does the job perfectly.

Edit2

Added Sapphire 2600 PRO to the old pc, the browser works incredibly fast and you can actually watch videos on the web. But the noise coming from this old machine is annoying, I did change the thermal paste but that didn't do much...
