Hi,

My girlfriend is using my old PC, from around 6 years ago. Last night the GPU finally gave up, below is spec just wondering if which card to replace it with? Better if possible without upgrading the PC, dont mind doing PSU if required.

Core2duo
Asus P5N32-E SLI
4GB GIEL DDR2 RAM
500W PSU
DEAD - Zotac GeForce 9800 GT AMP Edition, 512mb DDR3.

Thank you!

GTX 750Ti would be a good bet, just needs power via the PCI-E slot. Some models come with a 6 pin connector for overclocking.

Wow, she got quite a few years out of that card! :)

What does she use the computer for? Light gaming? It's hard to say without a model number but I imagine that the dual core CPU will be a bottle neck (and maybe the RAM too) so it's probably not worth spending more than about £70 on a new card. The 750ti is indeed a good recommendation though - it's small, quiet and won't put much pressure on the aging power supply.

I'd be inclined to recommend a fresh build though. After 6 years most of those parts are probably nearing the end of their lifespans.

Yeah I used it for long time, dread to think how many hours of hammer its had, she only games now and again so fresh build isn't really viable? She plays WoW, and Sims that's it, current setup was playing smoothly on mid settings at around 60 fps. So did well!

Thats fair enough, not worth rebuilding from scratch then.

The 750ti is maybe a little overkill compared to the rest of the system but it's a really nice little card thats capable of doing high settings in most games. You could save about £30 and go for a 260X but it would be slower, louder, hotter and draw more power.
