I've been asked to look at an old pc which isn't working properly - it powers up but there is no display. It's a shop bought pc, not custom build, made by fujitsu-siemens, so I'm stuggling to find out which motherboard it is (mainly because I can't get any display). The only thing I can see on the motherboard itself is SiS 964L. Can anyone confirm if this is the motherboard make/brand? Also, the bios gives out beep codes as it tries to boot, but I've not been able to find out what they mean. The beeps are 1-3-3-1, which i think will probably mean the onboard graphics aren't working. There isn't an agp or pci-e slot on the board, so I'm not sure if it's possible to get a graphics card. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance for any help.

You can get PCi graphics cards, although I'd imagine these days they're about as common as hen's teeth. It might be worth posting in the wanted section of the members market.

I would suspect that the board will be one manufactured especially for Fujitsu Siemens, and it will be very hard to get much information about.

You'd be surprised, you can still get PCI graphics cards as I had to fit some in my last job, funnily enough to Fujitsu systems, and they're not THAT expensive.

Saying that, if their system is an old P3 or <2.0Ghz P4 then you can have one of our old ones from work for no more than £30, so it's probably cheaper to replace the system than fix it.

As Mic551 asked, what's the model info from the sticker on the case (usually on the top, something like 'Scenic T, i845'). If you can find a working model the same you can just transplant the hard drive and not have to muck around at all.

It says on the top of the case:
Product: Scenic Edition X102
Model: M12W - D2140
It's got an Intel Celeron label on the side of the case and a sticker saying it's designed for windows xp, so I'm surprised it's not got at least an option for an agp card. If I get a pci graphics card, will it work if I just put it into a slot or would I need to see the display from the on board graphics to change the options in the bios?

Not looking good for you i'm afraid. We used to have to boot into Windows, DISABLE the onboard graphics in system manager and ignore the resulting warnings, shut down, install the PCI graphics card, then fire it up and everything worked. I think Fujitsu gave us this method after they didn't work to start with, so there's a good chance it won't just work.

I'd suggest you go to a shop that would try it first, then sell it you if it works, but it's unlikely anyone is going to stock a PCI card. So... you're only option is to see if you can find one on an auction site for a couple of quid. There's an "ASUS GeForce 6600 TD" going for £14 with just over 30 minutes left which is pretty good I think, although I was thinking more on the lines of 99p and a couple of quid postage so you're not too out of pocket if it don't work.
