This is what I currently have:

Asus P8P67 Pro
i5 2500k
6850 2gb
4gb G Skill Ripjaw DDR3
Corsair HX 520w PSU
80gb HDD (!)

What can I upgrade in this that will get me decent fps on modern games at medium settings without having to change the motherboard and PSU? If anything?
I don't mind if it's slightly older hardware.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

In order of preference I'd buy a new GPU and at least 8gb of RAM to replace your existing kit (sell both the old GPU and RAM on ebay). See how your games perform then. If you still need extra oomph look at an i7 as HoneyBadger advised.

What kind of budget do you have?

For £250 I would look at a second hand graphics card, something like a 7970 or 780ti, another 4gb (or 8gb) of ram which can go with what you already have, and a new ssd.

Depending on what cooler you have might be worth buying something better, but wouldn't spend more than £25 or so. You should easily be able to overclock to 4ghz without spending to much on a cooler.

I wouldn't bother much with an i7 upgrade, in reality it will make much less of an impact than a GPU/ram/ssd.

Hi, thanks.

My budget is around 200, 250 max.

Ok, well this should improve things for you. I'm not sure on the viability of simply adding another 4gb stick and hope they play nice together so I've added 8gb of RAM. Sell your old stuff if you can, get a few quid back. I'd always recommend buying new if you can - whilst there are some bargains to be had my hardware anxiety means I very rarely play the second hand lottery :)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £228.88 (includes shipping: £9.90)

Shopping list in order of importance.

1) used GTX 970 £130
2) another 4 or 8gb ram. 1600+.
3) 128 / 256gb sata SSD.
4) i7 2700K / 3770k. Non-k if you don't intend on overclocking.
