I've not been gaming for probably 7 or 8 years hence the age of my PC. I started playing Fallout 4 recently and wanted to add some cheap upgrades as the game struggles, probably due to the 1440 monitor.

What upgrades can you suggest? I don't have a budget but don't want to build a whole new PC yet.

Mobo: MSi P67A-GD65 (MS-7681)
RAM: 16GB - 4x4GB Corsair PC3-12800 (CX8GX3M2A1600CP)
CPU: Intel 3770K
GFX: AMD R9 290 4GB
PSU: Corsair RM850
HDD: 240GB Intel SSD
Case: Corsair Obsidian 650D Mid-Tower Case

I'm running vanilla.

Graphics are running @High which was auto selected by the game.

Would an RTX 3060 be worth it as they are cheaper?

CPU wise i think i'm maxed for the socket which is below recommended spec on Steam:
Memory i should be OK.

  • RECOMMENDED:
    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
    • Processor: Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent
    • Storage: 30 GB available space

The Sapphire is £309 @ OCUK, so at OCUK, I would pay the extra £39 for a higher tier card. In the video I linked, it can be quite a lot faster (TPU have it +33%, on average, here), though admittedly for some games it's only 5-10 FPS.

If the RTX 3060 12GB is £250, then the difference is £59 and just for Fallout 4, I don't think I would pay that, but if I intended to use it for other games and keep it for awhile then, yes.
Only really playing Fallout at the moment.
If that's original you might want to check the SMART data as it may need replacing soon.

Do note that the MSi P67A-GD65 motherboard is only PCIe v2 and the RX 6600 is only a x8 card. So the performance may be significantly compromised.
Smart data seems fine. The PC rarely got switched on over 5 years. Its a 520 series so an early model i think.

Would the 3060 be ok then?

I had to remove the OC as it was causing Fallout to crash.
