I have an old Dell PC (266MHz Pentium II, 128 Mb Ram) as a second PC running windows 98 and I was wondering.

a. Can I install Linux and if so which flavour?
b. Can I do anything useful with it?
c. Is it not better just to skip it?

Comments welcome

Stick a big drive in it and use it as a NAS? Something like DSL or Puppy you'll need for that spec. Processor not as important, it's all about getting the maximum RAM in there, and that should be cheap enough these days :)

Make a hardware firewall/router using Smoothwall or M0n0wall. Pack it with disks as well, set up Samba, and use it as a NAS/file server. If you use iTunes, set up mt-daapd and consolidate your music collection onto it.

If you're running headless I'd say go for Debian as a distro.

As said before a NAS sounds good for that machine. Look into FreeNas or Openfiller.
