I don't know if anyone is able to help me.

My son (and me) is Autistic (proof available), we are both into photography, old film cameras, and we want to do some close up photography.

Please can anyone suggest where we may get an old, non working CPU from, preferably with any cover removed that shows the actual inside of the chip.

Is there also anywhere we may get old, non working chips of many different ones, for example my son wants to do a photograph "Eggs and chips"

Any help would be very much appreciate.

Thank you Jeremy R

Look on that popular online auction site, also known as the bay, we're not allowed to directly post or discuss competitors on this forum but I'm sure you can figure out what I mean.

Search for "Broken CPU" and set condition to "For Parts Not Working" then sort by lowest price. There's a cool looking Cyrix from way back for under £10 including postage:

Other than that, there might be someone on the forum that has an old CPU sat around that they could send you.

Also will point you in the direction of the popular auction site, if you want exposed chip dies look for laptop CPU's they normally don't have a heat spreader on so you can see the die

Could always try cex, they do cheap old processors that work but at the cost it doesn’t matter if you break them. For example there is some amd processors on there for 25p! Just take a look through their website

@darael & others

Thanks for the kind offer to help out another forum member, though if something is given completely free which also includes free postage then that's fine, but when someone wants to ask for the postage to be covered that falls into the MM territory so isn't allowed I'm afraid :)

Thanks for clarifying this for me. Better to be safe than sorry. :o

Got old PC's with Pentiums and Core 2 Duos (from memory) sitting on a pallet at work. Can remove a few old chips and throw in the post if interested?

Thank you everyone much appreciated, my son is happy to pay for the thing and postage
If you want to make payment of any kind for the goods, then you should make any transactions within the Member's Market, here. But I believe you need 1,000 posts before you can apply for access to the MM, so you have some way to go first.

Or, as Space Monkey said, you can accept the items for free outside the MM.

I have a couple of old Athlon processors, you are more than welcome to have one. It will come as the chip is, i dont have the tools to remove the cover.

Edit:- im more than willing to cover cost of postage to get around the forum rules.

Today Stephen received a letter and a chip from this kind chap, what an amazing forum and what a lovely thing to do for my Autistic son.

Stephen has spent the past hour carefully cutting into the chip, now all he needs to do is find a safe way to remove the metal top
