old PS3 and new firmware

Hi all my mate said the old PS3`s are getting or have a chance of being bricked with the new PSN update is this true or a load of tosh?

ive read some older models are overheating with LA Noire due to the firmware, but not bricking

if it does though surely they are in the wrong and trading STD could sort it out no matter how old the PS3 was with or with out a receipt to as it worked before the update.

I mean its classed as damage to property and they would get done?.

This has nothing to do with the firmware and everything to do with LA Noire - as its also causing overheating on XBoxs.
