OK. Sorry for the noob question for starters.

I am fixing an old system, and I am thinking of replacing the Mobo and CPU because It will be cheaper and better overall than replacing an ancient socket.

So will the "Corsair CMX512-3200LL 512MB DDR". Which is PC3200 DDR1 fit on the newer AM2/+ boards?

There's also 2 sticks of Kingston which is simply called "DDR333". Which I assume refers to the effective speed of PC2700 RAM.

Lastly, what exactly am I matching when choosing RAM to make sure the board supports it?

No, sorry. The AM2 cpus have a DDR2 memory controller built in, that's why you don't get DDR1 support on any AM2 boards.

ASRock made some DDR1/DDR2 boards for Conroe chips, because back then intel chips didn't have the built-in memory controller AMD chips have had for ages.

Ah rubbish, thanks for clearing that up.

It might not be as cost effective then if I have to replace RAM, Mobo and CPU.

Yeah you're looking at £50 for a cheap Athlon II, £50 for a mobo with IGP (bit less without), £40 for 2gig ram or more like £90 for a 4-gig pair.

As you can see, RAM is expensive atm.
