I'm putting together an old PII build for my dad (his laptop melted, kinda needs a PC) and i've put a few parts together. I've got a choice of Graphics Cards:

  • ATI Rage Pro 3D - AGP
  • Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM - PCI

Which would be better? Thanks.

They are 2d cards so if you just want to display the desktop either will be good, although I think you will be better off for drivers with the Ati card.

Both have drivers up to XP but not Vista or Windows 7 I belive.

I'd say the AGP Rage pro would be a bit better.

I doubt i'd have much fun running any sort of Windows on the PII (apart from 95/98 of course). So i'm running this:

Thats so old skool you may aswell be building that gpu out of Frankincense and Myrrh :P

It is going a bit old isn't it.

My mate sold his 2nd PC a while ago. I think it was an Athlon 64 3000, 1 GB DDR 3200, Nvidia 6200 AGP low-profile, DVD-Writer etc all in a smart, slim quiet case. Running XP, you really couldn't fault it. I think he got £67 for it.

I'd take this person's advice.

It'll be an awful experience using a PII.And Linux isn't user friendly either.

You can get an infinetely better system for sub £100 and if he really needs a PC like you say that price shouldn't be a problem.

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. For ten (or more) year old hardware running software that was released a few weeks ago it's amazing. For most things it runs just like Ubuntu would on a modern PC. Slitaz is a masterful distribution, easily better than most other Operating Systems and it has a tiny footprint. The OS itself never goes above 5-10% CPU usage, and even browsing with multiple tabs i haven't got the RAM usage over 100MB yet.

Why spend money when i can use spare parts? It's only a temporary solution...

Just need to sort out a few issues (like sound and it not seeing the SWAP partition) and it's good to go.

To be honest as some else pointed out, both are 2d cards and will perform pretty much the same.

As a personal preference though, I suspect ATI would be better in terms of old drivers.
