Wow you haven't ran a mile from the title of this post!! Thanks for clicking :)

Gateway MY1300, WinME, 56k modem will connect to the internet but not transmit any data. It will dial my mobile number no problem, just can't send or recieve any data.

Laptop connects to the same ISP on the same phone line.
Tried different PCI ports
Tried different COM ports
Tried different modems with different PCI/COM ports
Tried disabling COM/Parallel ports in the bios to free up IRQs
Enabled Modem IRQ sharing
Disabled Modem IRQ sharing and tried different settings above

Am at the end of my tether, would have had a sacrificial fire with the thing if it wasn't an important clients computer. Please tell me I'm doing something stupidly simple wrong...why will it connect but not send or recieve any data?

I would try to help you, but you have tried so many combinations there isn't much left to suggest.

It sounds like the modem is operational - you say it can dial out.

Do the modem(s) show up as fully functional in control panel? Dig into the modem settings in control panel and you should find a diagnostics button (possibly labeled Query Modem).

What happens after the modem dials the ISP? Can you hear it make any response to the ISP Logon? I have had some lightning damaged modems go "deaf". They were able to phone out, but couldn't hold a conversation.

I have had cabling issues in the past. Some modems don't like four copper contacts on the modem plug, and only work properlly when it is just two.

Any weird security software on the PC? Any odd "modem accelerators"? Use msconfig to thin out the programs that autostart with the PC. (Turn em all off to test....)

I know that Tiny computers had a weird ISP that they installed on their PCs. I think it was called "Supernet". Nastiest part of this ISP being installed... it blocked access to any other ISP!! It installed something deep into the OS that couldn't easily be removed without wiping the OS.

How are you setting up the modem to dial the internet? Are you stepping through the OS Wizard or using an install disk?

WinME - ouch... I feel your pain in fixing this... but it is bizzarre that you are the second person this week to ask me about Win9x modems.... and probally only questions this year. :D

Oh forgot to say, I've tried 3 different PCI modems and all have the same symptoms. It has to be WinME.

Just using the regular dial up networking setup myself. Also tried the two different types of cable. Troubleshooting wise I think I've been as thorough as possible :( Thanks for writing so much :)

It has to be something I've missed in WinME. Think I may have to bite the bullet and try XP on it, but 256MB RAM - ugh!

Why still on Windows Me? You will benifit more on xp as drivers are more widly available now and once fully updated makes it a good os.

Buying extra RAM for that old PC so you can install XP will cost you less than the pain Win ME will give you. Don't forget ME has been abandoned by M$ so very limited updates now (for example - no ie7)

Bite the bullet - and upgrde the RAM. You should be able to find extra ram in the Members Market. What does it need? I have spare PC133 sticks you could have cheap.

I'm gonna put Win2k on it tomorrow and will see if that solves things. Ta for offer will be in touch if needed :)

Win2K - a much better option, even though that too has been abandoned by MS. At least there will be less headaches.

Don't forget to put Firefox or Opera on it as it will be stuck with IE6 otherwise. (Opera is good for dialup as it handles images well. And I used to surf dialup with images-off and then just toggle then on as needed)
