I've be ummm'ing and arrrr'ing for the last few days about what handheld console to try to pick-up cheap for the summer (gaming in the garden!)

Seen loads of cheap DS Lites/DSi and PSP 1000/2000 on eBay (or maybe from Game etc) but can't decide what to go for. I love the idea of revisiting some of the old Final Fantasy games but that's not a deal breaker. Bottom line - I'd appreciate some advice - what everyone's favourite and why :)

For the prices they go for you could probably easily pick up both a DSlite and and PSP. For Final Fantasy games in particular a PSP would be best as you can get pretty much every game from 1-9 (including tactics) although the DSlite will give you access to the better versions of Final Fantasy IV, V and VI but doesn't have any of the other main series games available. For games overall though the DSlite it arguable better as the NDS and GBA back catalogue is fantastic.

"Old school" pfft get ya self a gameboy and poke-mans red or blue.

Any handheld console I have got over the year has been useless in the garden. If you want a more recent handheld it's a hard choice between PSP and DS both have an excellent catalog of games new and old school alike.

Plenty of awesome remakes and re-releases. Maybe try and pick up both?

I have a Gameboy Pocket, powered by AAA's. Don't need none of this newfangled stuff with colour screens.

Pokemon FTW!

Gamegears, I remember playing on my mates when I was a kid, classic. I'm thinking a PSP sounds like it might be the way to go, with a few memory stick duos ;) Maybe a DS Lite later just for the updated FFIV.

I'd defo get a PSP- there are a huge number of ridiculously cheap games if you go to CeX or an independent shop. Get yourself Vice City Stories, Assassins Creed Bloodlines and Tomb Raider Legend and rock some outdoor gaming.

You're gonna have to play in the shade by the way, you won't see a thing in sunlight :D
