Good evening experts!

I've got an old AMD 3000 running WHS (the early edition, 2003?), and unfortunately it's on it's way out. Random reboots and critical errors popping up all over the place.

So, I'm looking at getting a replacement! I'm happy sorting out the hardware side of things but, I've been a bit out of touch with the software.

Basically I'm looking for something that will allow me to stream from the server and also fully back up my PC's /laptops (up to 10 ish machines. 5 would probably suffice). I'm not keen on trusting the cloud. Call me sceptical, but it's not for me!

Is Windows Server 2012 essentials up to the job? Is there a cheaper alternative? I can't really justify £300 for it but if that's all that's available, that will have to be it!

Thanks for your advice :)

Solaris 11.2 + Napp-it, for ZFS awesomeness and Unix stability. Or use OmniOS or OpenIndiana instead of Solaris if you're worried about licensing.
