Old Shuttle PSU Mod (40mm Fan Noise)

Hi all,

I have built a NAS using an old Shuttle SN45g.

Everything is working fine, I 7v modded the chipset fan and it's now quiet.

The PSU utilises a 40mm fan and it's a bit too whiney for my liking. Are there any mod's I can do to this? Or is it a case of replacing it with something better?

I don't want to chop a hole in the side of the shuttle case for a larger fan as want an OEM look.

How about an external power brick and a DC/DC converter like the newer shuttles use?

Think you'll find that it consumes far more leccy than you had thought.

BTW the PSU opens up and you can replace the 40x40x10 fan in there but you might find that it still gets toasty.

Instead let go... Give you shuttle a good send off and let her RIP.

Alternatively rip that mobo out and see if you can squeeze an ITX board in there ? I'm sure someone somewhere said they could ? :confused:

I ended up cutting an 80mm hole in the side of the PSU and added an 80mm fan, it did make it quieter but make sure it says cool....

I've ordered a 40x40x10 Papst fan that's meant to be quieter. Will let you know how I get on!

Now that's a shuttle I've not seen for a fair few years! Probably my favourite one

(nForce 2 chipset was awesome!)

I did all sorts of mods to my old SN45G and never got the power supply quiet enough with 40x40x10mm fans. Either mod it to fit a 60/80mm fan on the side of the power supply (but keeping it all internal within the case) or look at squeezing in a different power supply? I'm not sure if the PSU's from the likes of the SN85G4's will fit but they had a slim 60mm fan on the side that was much quieter. They should be around the same wattage and the same high quality

I've swapped out the fan and it's not silent but much much quieter and more importantly doesn't whine/resonate.

Airflow spec's are lower on this Papst fan but I've kept an eye on temperatures and happy with the results.

I have an sn27p2 i have 2x40mm fans at the top and the power supply fan, very tempted to swap them all out if i can as after replacing the 92mm exhaust it got to much quieter!
