dug out an old sblive card, might also have an audigy somewhere too, are either of them better than what's onboad an asus p8p67 board?

(using windows 7 x64)

I've been reading the forums on just this question and wondering much the same. The general consensus seems to be just about any sound card is still better than even new onboard, going back to Audigy anyway. The difficulty is the Windows 7 drivers for the audigy. I think you might be better just spending £20 on this Asus Xonar DG 5.1 PCI Sound Card with built in Headphone Amp - OEM Much better sound, Dolby Headphone for gaming and a built in headphone amp for a rather low price.

good question ive wondered this a few times. as i only game is it worth it? does it take any cpu power using on board? i know it will only be a tiny bit if it does...

Having a dedicated sound card is always better than using on board sound chips. Spending even a small amount on a good card will prove that it is worth it when you hear the difference (of course having speakers helps too).

Not all SoundCards are better than OnBoard at all.

There are some great onboard options out there and there are some really poor soundCards out there too!

The ONLY exceptions are the Asus and the Creative ones...

Those cards you can get for a tenner for example are a total aste of time and are really only any use for a basic internet PC that has a dead onboard option, or a really old PC that you can no longer find drivers for, other than that, they are pap at best,

I honestly cannot comment on your Particular onboard option, but I can safely say with complete honesty that some of my boards have fantastic onboard audio, quite possibly some are better than a basic SoundBlaster live or Audigy but at the same time as saying that, NONE are using their onboard option withj the exception of only one... Thats my Gigabyte GA78M-DS3 and thats only because it seems to go well with my Amp & Speakers so I never bothered to put another card in.

All other boards have Creative or Asus
