Just a quick post here (as well as in the ram section) .. I have an old i7 920do@4ghz with an Gigabyte EX58 UD5R mobo and win7 pro x64 ysytem. It has 6gb triple channel ram and I want to track down 12 or 24gb triple channel kit. Does anybody have the same specs and if so, what ram are you using above the 6gb mark? There isn't a lot of triple channel stuff around these days and 12gb seems to be the max. I'd be interested to know before I press the buy button on a kit of:
12GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Ripjaw Series (9-9-9-24) Triple Channel kit 3x4GB

You don't actually need to get 'tri-channel' memory, it's just a pack containing three memory modules. You can buy three separate modules and it'll work fine.

I run my X58 system with 4 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz modules and 2 x Crucial 1600MHz ones, maxing the system out at 48GB. Works just fine.

I got a 12gb set of G'Skill ripjaw ddr3-1600 pc3-12800 .. threw it in to the 4ghz overclock and it fired up straight away. Now, with the overclock in mind, what do I need to alter in bios to get it to run at the specs given for the ram. I'm running the gigabyte EX58-ud5r.

^Don't listen to this guy

Set XMP profile 1

ok .. I reset the bios to optimized and have set the xmp to "on" (it's the only other setting other than "disabled") .. I've rebooted and have now got what I think is the correct ram info in CPUID. I'm just running a quick 3dmark to see if it's running ok. I would have course lost my overclock of 4ghz. I used the gigabyte overclock settings guide to get it but they were only using 6gb of ram to do it. I think from reading around that because I have 12gb now, it will affect the voltages needed. Now I have a new OS SSD on it's way and I will then upgrade from win7 to win10. But i just wanted to get the system stable before all this. Or am I wasting my time .. shall I wait until I get the new OS installed?

You can't run 4 sticks of one type of RAM and 2 sticks of another kind of RAM in a triple channel setup and get triple channel out of it. It doesn't work like that.
Google exists btw. :)

Of course you can. I run 2 x4GB and 2 x 2GB in my Ivybridge system and it runs fine in dual channel mode. As long as you populate three slots with the same size modules then you will have triple channel.

eh ??? I've already bought a matching triple channel ram kit .. 12gb (3x4gb) .. G.Skill DDR-3 PC3-12800 CL9-9-9-24 1.5v
I have it running at the required specs but without the 4ghz overclock .. I just need to know what bios settings I need to get it to run "WITH" the overclock .. temps with the overclock were still cool (70 degrees) so if possible I would like to go 4.2 .. but i need to get the new SSD and OS sorted as well .. I know it's stepping back in time a bit, but I use it for photo and video editing and it's always been a workhorse for me ...

Sorry misread. Thought you wanted to buy a 12GB/24GB kit.

You actually can - it's called "flex memory mode" :)

Gigabyte manual said:
When memory modules of different capacity and chips are installed, a message which says memory is operating in Flex Memory Mode will appear during the POST. Intel ® Flex Memory Technology offers greater flexibility to upgrade by allowing different memory sizes to be populated and remain in Dual/3 Channel mode/performance.

As above, i'm running 18Gb on my i7 930.

The original 6Gb (3 x 2Gb) sticks in secondary slots, and 12Gb (3 x 4Gb) sticks in primary slots.

No idea on the timings, bought them many years ago.

actually, from what you are saying, I could throw in my original 3x2gb ram into the three unused slots and run them as well .. but is that more or less efficient than running dedicated triple channel ram (total 12gb) compared to (total 18gb) of whatever channel it will make it with all slots full??? Will that adversely affect the overclock?
