Actually taking your current generic PSU into consideration (you really should change it to a better quality/brand PSU before it blows up and take your entire system with it),.

I upgraded from a X1900XT to a HD5770 and the difference was mind blowing. But that was part of a full sytem upgrade. From an e2140 1.6Ghz dual core, 2GB ddr2 to a 3.1ghz Phenom II 550 X2, 4GB ddr3. So not sure if thats really relevant.

I've recently put a 1GB 4850 in the old sytem, as an upgrade from the X1900XT so the GF can play L4D2 and theres undoubtoubley a boost in peformance, but its not a gonna be one of those upgrades that make you go WOW.

If your looking for something cheap to tie you over, possibly look for a 4850/4870 for around the £40-60 mark. Or if you wanted something newer, I'm sure a 5770 would fit the bill at around £70-80. Second hand prices of course! Mine was running on a 450W CoolerMaster PSU no problems at all.

Didn't realised at first, but I have made the correction since #9. I stand corrected on not taking chances on using graphic card that require more than one PCI-E 6pin with that PSU, as while it is by Antec, it is not one of their better quality line PSU...and it comes with only one PCI-E 6-pin for a reason (we are not talking about quality PSU like the Corsair CX400W here).

And I honestly don't see what the problem is, as any more recent card that require 2xPCI-E 6pin would be bottlenecked anyway. 2nd hand 9800GT/GTS250/4850 (which only require 1xPCI-E 6pin) are the ones to go with with performance vs price considered.

Ok easy, not my most informative post, thought it was a generic model. Is it not 6yrs old though and wont its powers have waned somewhat.

An HD6850 1GB can be had for around £130 to £140 and will probably be fine TBH. OTH, an HD5770 1GB consumes less power and is around £100.

The HD5770 1GB consumes only slightly more power than the 75W a 16X electrical PCI-E slot can provide.
