my old machine had 2 x 250mb sticks of Nanya ram. my new machine has 2 x 1gb Geil . shall i put it in and hope for the best? I have a feeling that i can't do any damage and if it conflicts i can just take it out and carry on as i am now, or if this not the case and damage could be a result?

If that's DDR1 then no it won't even fit so if you do it will fry your ram and mobo.

If it's DDR2 then there will be no harm done worst that can happen is no post.

searched a number on it and think its this

256MB 240p PC2-3200 CL3 4c 32x16 DDR2-400 DIMM T007, Nanya, ADZ, NT256T64UH4A0FY-5A
Description:
NT256T64UH4A0FY-5A ADZ 256MB 240p PC2-3200 CL3 4c 32x16 DDR2-400 DIMM T007, Nanya

ddr2 then, but not worth bothering with?

The prices are so low now it's worth getting another 2Gb Geil ULL kit anyway if you're on vista and doing anything more than word processing/web browsing.
