Hi

I'm hoping to give my bro my tagan 480W UO-1 PSU for his upcoming core 2 duo rig. Itl have an e6400 oc'd to ~3.5ghz, x1800/1900xt, ~4 fans, fan controller, some cathodes, and x1 HDD.

I have been reading that most conroe rigs need waaaaaay less that 480W but my only thought is the max current draw on the 12v rail. My PSU has a rating of 28A on the +12v rail.

ALso as it has no PCI-E connectors what will i need to purchase, as i have seen dual molex -> 6-pin pci-e connector ?

Thanks

That should be absolutely fine, you might need a 20-24pin adapter for the motherboard if you don't already have one and a 4-6pin adapter for the graphics card as you guessed(normally comes with the graphics card).

While not directly comparable I will tell you my personal experience.

I had a rig at one time with a dual opty, DFI mobo Ultra D, X1900, 2GB ram , 2Hdd, 1 optical drive and a pci sound card all working off a 480w Tagan U01 - which had shown faithful service for around 2 years and numerous upgrades and this system was completely error free and stable as a rock even oc'd slightly.

I simply change the mobo - to an Abit AT8-32X ATI RD580 and with a completely fresh windows install even with everything at stock it was just slightly flaky, which I could only ever put down to the combination of the mobo , psu and X1900 (which is infamous for its high current draw)

Changed the PSU to a 700w beast ( I knew I would be going Xfire before long so thought this was a reasonable investment anyway) and the rig was ultra stable again even after oc'ing

This is my personal experience and I went through every componant making sure it was firmly seated etc, so I am pretty certain it was this combo that was responsible

Now obviously apart from a completely different mobo - we cant be certain - but if you can afford it I would be heavily tempted to at least go for a 580w psu at the least, which should be usable over your next few upgrades also

Upto you :D

Thanks, that's jsut what i wanted to here. Il try this psu out with my brothers new rig when all the bits arrive. Im looking for a healthy overclock on *** allendale up to at least 3.5ghz, and his case will have x2 sunbeam fan controllers and 8 fans or so.
With the lower power draw of the core 2 duo it might be ok, but il keep an eye on it.
