Morning all,

I used to be on these fine forums many many years ago then kind of got out of touch with computers when Wife and kids came along. I'm now back and need a new rig as I've got sick of using laptops.

To give you an idea of how long ago I was on here my last rig was based around a heavily overclocked XP2000.

I mainly use it for Photoshop and video editting but am getting back into PC gaming after years of using consoles.

Anyways I'm a bit out of touch with everything so any comments on my planned build or anything I've missed then please let me know, I haven't decided on keyboard and mouse yet.

The memory is probably the thing I'm most unsure of though it does look to cosmetically match the mobo.

I've always been an AMD user - as I said I'm out of touch, What would I gain?

Rich

You would gain everything from a better performance to better temps.

A single GTX970 is not enough to play games at native 4K,, hence the 1440P screen.

FX8350 vs 4790K - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/697?vs=1260

I'm stubborn and plan of overclocking it so I'd prefer to stick with what I know though that certainly looks a great setup.

Is there anything specifically wrong with my choices? Does the memory need to be improved without upping the budget massively?

Have I missed anything obvious to get me up and running straight away?

Rich

You havent missed anything that you need, but....

The case is expensive just because it comes with a water cooler pre-fitted

The CPU will get REKT by the 4790K in all tasks.

A single GTX970 is not enough to game on a 4K monitor.

Retail Blu-ray drives come with playback software.

The plan is to fit a second card at some point in the near future - trying to sell the concept of spending a couple of grand on a computer to the wife was hard enough let alone trying to convince her I needed a second GPU. I'll sneak one in in a month or so when she's calmed down.

I noticed you specced 750W PSU's - could I run 2 GPU's on that or would the 850 be a safer bet for future upgrades?

That Bench comparison makes interesting reading - may have to have a rethink.

Rich

A good 750W is enough to power 2 GTX 970's due to their efficiency and relatively low power draw, especially for what you get out of them :)
