Wow, they're showing "Oldboy" on channel 4. I'm impressed. Oldboy is one of my all-time favourite movies. Superbly twisted, and fantastic plot/character development thoughout.

Never thought I'd see this one on British TV.

Indeed. I particularly love the very final twist (in the snow).

Without doubt the finest piece of Korean cinematography in existance. Although, I think it takes a couple of viewings to truly appreciate it.

I actually find Chinese drama cinema to be higher quality than anything I've seen from Japan or Korea.

Then you are either small minded, OR havn't seen enough east-asian cinema.

That is an interesting point. Only the other day I was discussing with a friend how most westerners couldn't even name a single Japanese non-animated movie which isn't violent.

There is a big difference between the things which are actually popular in east asia, and the things we hear about over here.

Yes! Pans Labyrinth is absolutely superb. Very highly recommended (despite the fact that it's by the same director as "Hellboy").

Cool, not my normal type of film and subtitles normally annoy me but with all its hype i can't not watch it.

Although, I should warn you... It's probably not a great movie to watch if you've had a few beers or are tired. It may look like a fairytale, but it's a little more complicated than that. It actually helps if you have an existing knowledge of the Spanish civil war.

Not entirely, but for the most part, yes. Certainly the mainstream at least.

Bad example, the Wachowski brothers even admited they took their inspration from "Ghost in the Shell".

As for Donnie Darko, I agree it was an original movie, but I thought it was too actively trying to be original.

True enough. But it does however attempt to appeal to the trigger-happy action hero USA audience, which is what my "yippe ki yay" comment was about.

I cant remember if it was actually Japanese or not but "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring" wasnt a violent movie but I really enjoyed it.
