Hello all!

Basically im writing my final year dissertation with the working title:

"Analysing storytelling innovations in the games industry"

Ive been doing a lot of reading about influential games titles that really pioneered the advances in the storytelling elements of computer games but ive come up short on some very early titles that first appeared.

Does anyone know of the very first titles that had good story elements? if so why?

in addition what are your views on story vs gameplay?

discuss

ps. didnt know where to put this thread but it applies to console games also

half life

or if you really wanna go far back, monkey island?

i cant remember anything before monkey island that had a story, most was just platform like sonic lol.

metal gear solid??

I'm sure you've covered it but the first game I can remember that really blew me away in terms of storytelling was Monkey Island. The characterisation, humour, creativity and plot were far ahead of anything I had played previously. For me it remains the best adventure game ever written.

Well going back even further in the days of the Spectrum, C64 and Amiga the games, for me, had to have a good story. Some were very basic like Treasure Island Dizzy (getting shipwrecked and trapped on a Treasure Island and having to escape) to Dungeon Master where they wrote 30 pages in the manual about what happened and then continued this theme into Chaos Strikes Back.

Nowadays and I class Half Life amongst them - it's a very basic storyline. Aliens invade you are the only person who can stop them, yadda yadda. It's nothing inspiring there. Galdregons Domain, BAT, Hunter, Monkey Island, Captive, Supremacy, The Last Ninja, Infiltrator, Legend of Valour, Spellbound, Bloodwych, Robin of the Wood, etc. all had very good stories and had some very nice instruction books. They made you think that when you were playing the game you were making a difference and affecting something rather than just being along for the ride.

I remember playing a game called The Hobbit back on my old Spectrum 48k - I've just looked it up on Wiki and it seems that it was quite an influential title.

Granny's Garden.

Early puzzle adventure game that came out on the bbc, played no doubt by just about every 30 something frequenting this board.

Had everything, the story, puzzles, and ofc the fear element when the witch got hold of you.

if you're looking for an industry pioneer, thats a title you should research for sure.

Zelda on the NES was one of the first games I remember telling a full story, also the original MGS on the NES.

Played hobbit many moons agao, had loads of text adventures like Waxworks & even one called soho sex quest.......don't ask.
